About Port 80

Which is really "about Dan Buettner"

I'm one guy, and this is my company. My goal is to work with you to create truly great software that fits your needs.

I've been building software for the publishing and financial services industries for 15 years, and I'm pretty good at it. I've built systems to monitor and automate daily newspaper production; to handle the news and advertising photo workflow for the entire Gannett corporation; and to handle online registration for RAGBRAI.

I'm a great person to work with: I listen to you and work collaboratively with you; I can explain complicated technologies and why you might or might not want to use them; and I am adept at finding ways to get things done without spending a ton of money.

I've even been nominated for or won a couple of awards along the way: finalist for The Des Moines Register's Employee Of The Year/2001, runner-up for Gannett's Innovator of The Year/2008, and 1st place in a coding contest at Ruby Midwest/2011.

On the technical side, I am an expert on the web, rapid application development (sometimes called "Agile"), and relational databases. I see the big picture of complex systems, and understand the importance of working in an interconnected world.

Outside of work

My wife and I have made Des Moines, Iowa our home since graduating from Grinnell College. We love living here; it may be the greatest big small town in the world. We have two small children, and we're committed to the community.

I ride my bike year-round for work and errands. My wife thinks I'm nuts; the kids think it's fun. Usually.
